Know which substance you are working with

Studying H and P phrases

Study H phrases and P phrases if you are going to work with a hazardous substance. These can be found on the packaging label, in section 2 of the safety data sheet or in the hazardous substances register. In addition to section 2, the following sections are also important before you start working with the material:

  • Section 4 First aid measures
  • Section 6 Incidents
  • Section 7 Handling and storage

Safety data sheets can be found in the NFU Hazardous Substances Database

Clear labelling

If you fill bottles, jars and drums with hazardous substances or preparing solutions in the workplace for your own use, you are obliged to apply a label. This label must state:

  • Username
  • Creation date
  • Name of the substance
  • Signal word
  • Hazard icon

On glassware or on aids, in which you use constantly changing hazardous substances, you clearly state the common name or the hazardous components if it is a multiple substance. This is not necessary if you use the glassware for a short period of time and immediately clean or throw it away.
