External transport

External transport of hazardous substances refers to transport on public roads. Note: even within the premises of your umc, roads are often publicly accessible, meaning ADR regulations apply. External transport primarily occurs from the supplier to the umc and may also involve transportation between buildings. The following applies:

  • Make agreements with the supplier where (hazardous) substances can be delivered safely and to the right location.
  • Establish procedures for the safe delivery or collection of hazardous (waste) substances. Also take into account tank trucks that come to load and unload. Not only bulk gases such as cryogenic gases and oxygen, but also diesel fuel and concentrated acids and alkalis can be delivered by tank trucks.
  • In addition to a total smoking ban (including e-cigarettes), there must be supervision during loading and unloading.
  • Emergency procedures have been made and are available in case leakage may occur.

Radioactive substances, GMOs, biological agents

Radioactive substances, genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and infectious biological substances that are dangerous to humans or animals are not exempt from the ADR. If you would like to know more about this, please contact your occupational health and safety advisor (arboadviseur) or the appointed expert, such as the radiation expert, the biological safety officer or the safety advisor for the transport of hazardous substances.

Air transport

Rules for the transport of dangerous goods by air have been laid down by the international air transport organization IATA. For air transports, inquire at a specialized transport company or at the aviation modality safety advisor (IATA).
