Find distraction and relaxation

If you have experienced a major event, it is not a bad thing to to work on it, but also focus your attention outwards by doing various activities, such as walking, cycling, making music or sports and relaxation. Make use of your own life history: what do you normally do to deal with stress?

Deal with emotions step by step

Gradually confront issues related to the impactful event that you now find emotionally (anxious, sad, desperate, uncertain) and therefore avoid. Both at work and in your private life. Try not to let the distance to daily life become too great. The feeling of getting a grip on life again gives self-confidence and control.

Keep your daily rhythm

Try to maintain the daily work rhythm. Contact with work gives you the opportunity to talk to colleagues about what you've experienced. They know what you are going through and often only need half a word. If you are unable to resume work, discuss this with your manager. Your manager is responsible for finding a good solution together with you. You can also make use of the  consultation hour of the company doctor.

Keep in touch with your environment

Do not hesitate to contact your environment yourself, such as neighbours, friends, family, colleagues, fellow students or fellow sufferers. It may be that those around you find it difficult to approach you, because they don't know exactly what you need. They may feel uncomfortable, but they are willing to listen to you and help you.
