First reception
Always inform your manager or substitute manager after a major event. Your manager can help you, for example by organizing the first shelter and offering support in emotional processing. The manager can also arrange collegial care or organize a group discussion with all employees who were involved in a major event. In a group conversation there is room to tell what you want to say, but there is also room for you and your colleagues to be together.
This animated video from Erasmus MC shows what a major event can do to you and that it is good to talk about it with colleagues. If you want to know more about peer support in your umc, ask your occupational health and safety advisor.
Further shelter
Processing a major event takes an average of two weeks to six months. Talking about it with colleagues, fellow students, fellow sufferers, partner, friends, neighbors, manager or peer caregiver is often enough for the processing process. But if you still have symptoms such as fatigue, concentration problems, fear of recurrence, anger, sadness or guilt, it is good to contact your manager or the company doctor. The company doctor can refer you for professional support. Your umc has its own protocol for dealing with major events. You can find that on the intranet.
